CAST Canada is a small Canadian organization dedicated to raising awareness about trauma, loss and grief among health professionals, academics and communities. Offering educational workshops, conferences and in-services CAST Canada’s goal is to reduce unnecessary suffering and improve quality of life for those working in and supported by health and helping professions. We are committed to reaching hard to serve areas and striving to identify and nurture improved ideas and approaches.
Grounding Trauma Conferences started in 2004 in Brampton, and now is Canada’s leading national conference bringing the best in thinking and creative approaches to supporting trauma survivors. By utilizing a blend of narrative, lecture, plenary discussions, experiential and creative sessions we aim to create and foster an entire conference culture.
Why 'Grounding' Trauma?
Trauma is a large, complicated issue. We find that people often ignore it and focus on a particular part of trauma and others pedestalize it, focusing on it exclusively with such energy other critical parts of the person’s story are missed. Trauma needs to be grounded in the full experience of the individual and approached with balance and openness.
And, as trauma is as complicated as life itself and our understanding of it is continuing to grow, this annual conference is intended to bring you quality, leading edge education and an experience that will connect you to others with similar work, and passions.

“Challenging Paradigms – Innovative Solutions”
CONTENT OPTIONS AND WORKSHOP STREAMS:
Stream 1. Challenging Paradigms:
Within the health and helping field we aim to explore what isn’t working and why in a detailed exploratory way. What are our fears? What stifles progress? Why are some organizations proactive and dynamic while others are not. Let's be controversial and seek to address ways to change the culture of support/trauma, review language and barriers, assess various approaches, research programs and other ideas that need to be dissected and repaired.
Stream 2. New and Exciting Ideas, Pilots or Programs:
We are also interested in highlighting and sharing newly developed and perhaps controversial, outside of the box responses that are innovative, creative and being piloted in response to the challenges faced in the work and that change the culture of support/trauma.

- Do you ever think that present trauma paradigms need to be challenged?
- Do you find present trauma language inadequate, approaches not satisfactory?
- What ideas do you have to shift, explode, etc the present paradigm?
- What gets your goat? Really - let's push the envelope here on ways we are not supporting people well and ways we should be ...
Stream 2. New and Exciting Ideas, Pilots or Programs:
We are also interested in highlighting and sharing newly developed and perhaps controversial, outside of the box responses that are innovative, creative and being piloted in response to the challenges faced in the work and that change the culture of support/trauma.
- Do you have a new idea, project, shift in language or innovative strategy to share?
- Is there a new approach that is edgy, perhaps controversial, that is worth exploring?
- Have you piloted an interesting idea that is outside of the box and had success?
NOTE: Some ideas we are currently interested in exploring include, but are not limited to:
- The entire paradigm of 'trauma', trauma/PTSD language and supports,
- Peer work, both in addiction areas and LGBTQ2S areas
- Approaches to understanding and researching suicide, addiction and substance use
- Positivity... too much positivity can at best be patronizing and un-authentic and at worse cause harm
- Critical incident response programs
- The 'best practice' trap
- The notion of self-care as response
